Don’t be a Donkey
One day there was a Lion a Donkey and a Fox out hunting for Rabbits. They spent most of the day hunting and made a pile of Rabbits that they caught. At the end of the day the Lion told the Donkey to divide up the Rabbits amongst the three of them. The Donkey made three equal piles at which time the Lion ate the Donkey. Then the Lion told the Fox to divide the Rabbits between the two of them. The Fox put all the Rabbits into one pile and kept one little scrawny Rabbit for himself. The Lion said to the Fox “how did you learn to count so well”. The Fox said “I learned it from the Donkey”.
The Great Lesson
One of the greatest lesson’s to know is that it is always faster and easier to learn from other people’s experience. If you were going to learn how to play golf and you had the opportunity to learn from Tiger Woods, do you think that it would be faster and easier as well as more fun? When starting and running your business wouldn’t the same principle apply? I am not saying that we are the Tiger Woods of the business world, but I am saying that if you were able to have someone with experience help you in your business venture that it might be a wise decision. If you have the opportunity to take business consul from Donald Trump, I would recommend that you take it. The problem is that you might not want to pay what he charges.
Find the Shortcuts
I recommend that you think about finding shortcuts. These shortcuts are not the same as figuring out how not to do the work that is necessary to build your business. These shortcuts are finding the best answers to starting and running your business as quickly as possible. They do not give you more money for doing something the longer or harder way, it might seem like you should get extra money but you don’t. The banker will not add any money to your deposit if you tell him that you didn’t buy a book, or didn’t listen to anyone, or didn’t check with anyone who had done it before. If you started your restaurant by figuring out how to make fire by rubbing two sticks together, it is going to be a long and costly process for you. The biggest shortcut to find is what other people know through experience. This is different then what other people know. It is what they know through experience.
Throw your Fastball
A successful business owner will know a little about everything. You might want to start a restaurant because you are a great chef but if you don’t know anything about marketing then you won’t have any customers to buy your food. If you are not good at bookkeeping then you might have troubles with your cash flow. If you don’t have a good training and operations system in place you will definitely have problems with your employees. Most small business owners are very good at doing one thing, but there are many important parts of a business that need to be done well. Throw your fastball means to do what you do best, and find others to do what you don’t do well. If you are a painter then the best way to spend your time is to paint. Although many other things need to be done, you can pay people to do most of those things. The one thing that you cannot pay anyone to do for you is to paint. Don’t waste time doing your bookkeeping; pay someone to do it for you. Many business owners will try to save money by doing things themselves and they end up wasting time that should have been spending doing what makes them money.
